Description

Hadham Mill is a millhouse that dates back to the 17th century, with possible earlier origins. It features a timber frame construction, plastered with some decorative pargetting, and has a painted brick base. A plastered northern range was added in the late 18th century. The southern front is irregular and two and a half storeys high, with five windows. It has three linked, projecting gable ends towards the east, with the easternmost being a mid-17th century stairwell. A half-hipped western gable is adjacent to a mid-17th century chimneystack that has both square and diagonal shafts. The building includes 17th and 18th century leaded casement windows arranged in groups of two to six, along with one central dormer. The ground floor features a modern roughcast window bay on the west side.

The northern front has five windows and is symmetrical with two storeys. It has a central doorcase that is pilastered and features an open-pediment in the Adam style, along with a leaded fan. The first floor has a flush 6/6 sash window and a dentil eaves cornice. The ground floor has modern roughcast, square sash window bays. The entire house includes a timber-framed eastern kitchen block. Inside the southern range, there are chamfered and stopped beams and joists on both the ground and upper floors, along with scratch moulded panelling on the ground floor. The central room on the first floor features running plaster decoration on the beam and over the fireplace, which has a plaque dated 'EH, 1641'. The stairwell includes flat, scroll profile balusters from the 17th century leading to the top floor.
