Description

The Mary Field Monument is located in the old churchyard, 35 metres south of the church porch. This memorial, dating from around 1792, is made of limestone and features a tall slab with a curved, moulded top. The slab is adorned with palmette urns carved in low relief on either side. It has a well-cut inscription that reads: "To the Memory of Mrs Mary Field who departed this Life July 31st 1792. Aged 79 Years." Below the inscription are the lines:

"On the green hill top Hard by the House of Prayer a modest roof And not distinguished from its neighbour town Save by a slender-tapering length of spire The Grandame sleeps CHARLES LAMB."

Mary Field was the grandmother of Charles Lamb and the subject of his poem "The Grandame." She served as the housekeeper at Blakesware, which is located to the northwest of Widford. The monument is part of the churchyard group.
