Description

Hertford Lodge East is a lodge built around 1870 for Abel Smith, located in Woodhall Park, Watton-at-Stone. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with stone dressings and features a timber balcony and a slate mansard roof, designed in a French Classical style. It has a rectangular shape with projections on each face, larger at the front and rear. The lodge is one storey with an attic and has steps leading up to the entrance, which faces the drive and includes a part-glazed door framed by a pedimented doorcase with a Gibbs surround.

On either side of the entrance are tall single-light small pane casements with gauged brick flat arched heads. The side returns feature three-light casements, also with gauged brick flat arched heads. A continuous stone cornice runs along the top, with a vase balustraded parapet that projects on modillion brackets to the left. The entrance front and returns are adorned with a covered balcony that has three trellissed bays on each side, with a projecting center on the returns that features a cusped head. French windows open onto the balcony at the short ends. The mansard roof has a ridge parallel to the entrance front and segmental pediments over the balcony in shallow gables. There is a central stack with a moulded stone base and cap, featuring four separate shafts, and an oval opening in a gable at the rear. A lean-to outshut is present on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected.
