Description

This is a house, now used as a shop and dwelling, dating from the mid to late 16th century. It was floored and heated in the 17th century and remodelled, re-roofed, and extended in the early 19th century. The building is timber-framed with red brick additions, and the external walls are rendered and scored to resemble ashlar. It has a slate roof. Originally, it was likely a double-ended hall house, now forming a half 'H' shape.

The recessed 'hall' range has an entrance leading to a lobby and a rebuilt multiform ridge stack. A ground floor canted bay window and a first-floor tripartite sash window are located to the right. The eaves have moulded soffits with diamond patterning. Projecting cross wings are jettied with shallow hipped roofs. The left, or lower, end has a shallow canted bay window on the ground floor and a small oriel window above. The upper wing on the right has a 20th-century shop front on the ground floor and a three-light casement window above.

The rear of the right side has pargetted panels with an entrance to the shop. The left return has an 19th-century brick stack and a tile-coped projection towards the front, along with two-light flush frame casements. A short 19th-century addition extends to the rear right, with cambered heads over the windows. A 19th-century wing extends to the rear left, featuring a half dormer on its outer elevation.

Inside, there is some exposed timber framing of large scantling. A cambered tie beam with struts supports the steeply pitched rafters of the original hall roof.
