Description

This is an early 18th-century house, with a later 18th-century northwest wing. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with steep, old red tile hipped roofs. The house is a square, double-pile design with a cellar and attics, and has end chimneys. The plan incorporates a rectangular two-story north extension with a separate roof. The front of the house faces east onto the road and is symmetrical, with hipped dormers in the roof. It has a moulded brick eaves cornice, five upper windows with gauged brick flat arches, and two similar windows to each side of a central set of railings along the frontage. The windows are flush box sashes with 6/6 panes, and the front door is half-glazed with a rectangular fanlight, sheltered by a moulded flat hood supported on bold shaped brackets. The south-facing garden front features three tall sash windows. A contemporary brick wall extends to the south, and was extended in the 19th century to enclose a walled garden, which includes a dovecote. The building was formerly known as Pope’s Hall, and served as the manor house.
