Description

Oak Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century, with a western chimney and floor added in the early 17th century, and a later 17th-century floor in the eastern part. It underwent renovations in the 19th century, which included the addition of a central staircase, an external chimney on the eastern gable, and a rear extension, with further changes to the eastern exterior in the mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame set on a plastered brick sill, roughcast, and is topped with a steep old red tile roof.

The house is two storeys high, with an end chimney and consists of three cells and five structural bays, facing south with the western gable towards the road. The narrow central bay contains the staircase and entrance, while the principal room on the western side is heated. There is a trimmer for an older staircase that runs parallel to the rear wall in the eastern part. The southern front has two windows on each floor, with a gabled enclosed central porch. The first floor features renewed two-light casement windows, and the ground floor has small three-light oriel windows.

Inside, the cottage has exposed timbers, including close-studding and straight tension braces in the rear wall, heavy flat axial joists in the western part, and a chamfered axial beam in the eastern part. The roof is a clasped-purlin collar-truss design, and there is a large open fireplace in the western internal gable chimney, which includes two niches with corbelled heads in the rear wall and a chamfered lintel with bar stops.
