Description

Dovecote, dating from circa 1700, converted to a granary in the 19th century and now used as a garden store. The dovecote is constructed of red brick, chequered with blue brick, and has a steep, pyramidial roof now covered in slates. It is a tall, square structure with a blocked principal entrance on the north side, featuring a brick label and an ovolo moulded oval window above. Ovolo moulded brick detailing is visible on the plinth and below the former plaster eaves cove. The walls are 13½ inches thick. A floor was inserted for use as a granary, with remains of bins on the north and south sides of the upper level. The lower part has been dug out to create a store with a door on the north side. The interior is plastered, with the ceiling following the shape of the roof inside. A single tie-beam runs north-south, and there are ties across each corner attached to the wallplate. The flat apex of the ceiling may have previously supported a cupola or lantern for dove access.
