Description
No. 38 Crib Street is a house that was later used as a public house. It dates from the 17th century and underwent alterations in the 19th century, with further restoration and partial rebuilding in 1990. The building is timber-framed, finished with smooth render, and has an old tiled roof. It features a large red brick chimneystack with an oversailing course and four pots, which it shares with No. 40. The house has two storeys; on the ground floor, there is one triple light sash window, and on the first floor, there is one single light sash window, both of which are modern replacements with glazing bars and are flush set. During the 1990 restoration, a small 17th-century wood mullioned window was revealed on the first floor. The door is set back in a reveal and has a slim architrave surround. A two-storey rear extension was added in 1990. Together with No. 40, this building was known as The Red Cow Public House during the 19th century until the 1930s. It is included for its group value.
