Description
Crib House is a house that consists of two structures, which later became a public house. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the 19th century and restoration and partial rebuilding in 1990. The right-hand section shares its structure with No. 38 and is timber-framed, featuring a smooth render finish on the front, with dark stained weatherboarding on the sides and rear. It has an old tiled roof and a brick chimneystack that is shared with No. 38. The building is two storeys high, with a single-light sash window on the first floor and a triple-light sash window on the ground floor, both of which have glazing bars and are flush set. There is a four-flush panel door in a plain wooden reveal and surround, topped with elaborate cut console brackets supporting a hood.
To the left is the earlier 16th-century structure, which is also timber-framed and smooth rendered, featuring a steeper pitched old tiled roof. This section is also two storeys high, with a jettied first floor supported by cut wooden brackets and exposed beam ends. It has one flush set sash window with exposed boxes and glazing bars on the first floor and a sliding Yorkshire casement window on the ground floor, which is also flush set with glazing bars. Both windows appear to be reproductions of earlier designs, installed during the 1990 restoration. A two-storeyed rear extension was built in 1990. Together with No. 38, this building operated as The Red Cow Public House during the 19th century until the 1930s.
