Description

Numbers 1 and 3 Crib Street are a house, originally built in the 16th century and altered in the 18th century, now divided into two dwellings. The building is timber-framed with colourwashed pebbledashed plaster and an old tiled roof. It follows a 4-bay cross-passage plan.

The building is two storeys high. The first floor has a continuous jetty supported by wooden brackets, and four flush-set casement windows with glazing bars. The ground floor has two canted bay windows with sash windows containing glazing bars, set beneath the jettied overhang, and one flush-set casement window to the left. The entrance to Number 3 features a recessed door with a pulvinated frieze above and twin consoles supporting a flat doorhood with cornice moulding, situated immediately beneath the jetty.

The interior reveals exposed timber framing, and a Tudor-arched doorhead in the left-hand room of Number 1, adjacent to an inserted chimneystack. A second chimneystack is located externally at the right-hand (north) end of Number 3. The rear (west) wall abuts the grounds of The Manor House, located at 9 Church Street, and it is believed that Numbers 1 and 3 may have originally served as the steward's house. Both properties were owned by Trinity College, Cambridge for a significant period.
