Description
No. 1 Francis Road is a house that was formerly a public house known as The White Horse. It dates from the mid-19th century and is constructed of yellow brick, which has been painted on the side facing Crib Street, with a cement rendered plinth. The building features a hipped roof covered with Welsh slates and has a wooden eaves cornice. It stands two storeys tall and has one window on both the ground and first floors facing Crib Street, while the main facade is on the north side facing Francis Road. The design includes full-height end pilasters and a slightly projecting center that contains the doorway. The windows are arranged in a 1:1:1 pattern and are sash windows with glazing bars set in reveals under flat arches. The entrance features a two-fold half-glazed door with two flush panels beneath a semicircular dummy fanlight. The building was likely constructed by its first owner, John Francis, after whom Francis Road was named, and it is noted that it was known as The White Horse Public House before 1851.
