Description

Eventide House, previously known as Netherfield House, is a large house dating from circa 1860, built for Sir Charles Booth. It was designed in the style of E.M. Barry. The building is constructed from grey brick and Bath stone with slate roofs. It is an Italianate large house, originally two storeys high, with a three-storey tower over the entrance on the north side. The house has a compact rectangular plan, centered around a grand staircase and with principal rooms overlooking the valley to the south and east. A lower, two-storey service wing with cellars extends to the west, built in a simpler version of the same style. A grand Tuscan portico provides the main entrance, with steps leading up between two large columns. A balustraded balcony sits above the portico. The exterior features moulded stone string courses and large stone brackets at the eaves. The ground floor has round-headed windows, whilst the floors above have segmental arched windows, all with recessed casements. The east front has five windows, and a large single-storey canted bay window with a balustraded top. The south front is asymmetrical but balanced, with a two-window façade repeated. To the south, there is a matching brick screen wall with stone arches, linked to a moulded stone plinth and a stucco arcaded rear wall, which is part of the remains of a former conservatory. Original outbuildings are attached as lean-to structures behind the conservatory wall.
