Description

Fern Cottage, also known as Woodside, is a house that has been divided into two separate homes. Both sections date back to the 18th century and were extended and subdivided in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features a steep old red tiled roof. The west gable is timber-framed and plastered, and there is a two-storey rear wing. The layout consists of a central chimney with a two-room plan, a lobby entry, and a staircase located behind the stack in the west room. The rear wing extends from the east room, and there is a west extension with an internal gable chimney.

The structure has one and a half storeys and three windows, with the upper windows rising through the eaves as gabled lucarnes. The original symmetrical north front had three windows, a brick floorband, and wide segmental arched windows on either side of the door. There are narrower square upper windows situated under the eaves. A central blocked opening remains above a gabled door hood supported by shaped brackets, which has a boarded front. The entrance features a half-glazed four-panel door, and there is a recessed sash window with vertical margin lights. The composite chimney has been rebuilt above the ridge, and the roof is supported by side purlins.
