Description
The granary at Nine Ashes Farm, located 24 metres north of the dovecote, is a late 18th century to early 19th century structure. This tall, single-storey granary is timber-framed and weatherboarded, facing west, and is raised on three rows of six dressed stone staddles. It features a steep gabled roof that is currently covered in corrugated asbestos.
On the west wall, there are two plank doors positioned one above the other in the middle. The granary has an unusual design with five narrow bays, incorporating short braces and long braces from the bay posts to the wall plate in alternate bays. The roof structure includes queen struts and clasped purlins, with long straight braces connecting to the tie beams. The corner posts are jowled, while the bay posts are unjowled. Each end wall features ogee bracing. Inside, there is a boarded floor supported by heavy floor beams.
This granary is part of a picturesque group that includes the historic dovecote and barns at Nine Ashes.
