Description
The Gate House is a wing of a house that has been converted into a separate residence. It was built in 1832 by Kemp for Reverend Nicolsen Robert Calvert, with an inscription in the cellar noted by Gibbs in 1915. This two-storey, attic, and basement Gothic house is constructed of white brick and faces north. It was originally part of Hunsdonbury, located nearby to the south.
The building features steep gabled tile roofs with stucco gabled dormers, and heavy stucco moulding on the gable and eaves parapets. The openings have raised stucco surrounds with square-headed moulded labels and boldly modelled heads serving as finials. The front facade has two windows, a central door with a fanlight, and a large chimney that rises from the moulded parapet, which includes a quatrefoil shield panel. There are three octagonal chimneys with plaster bases and brown brick shafts topped with caps resembling panelled fonts. The brickwork is laid in Flemish bond.
The windows are three-light wooden casements with pointed lights, and the door is a six-pane studded design. To the left, there is a gabled wing set back, featuring a five-light moulded mullioned window with pointed leads on the ground floor and a three-light window on the first floor. A similar three-shaft chimney is present on the side. At the rear, there is a short lower wing and a modern square conservatory in the angle. The Gate House is an interesting example of early 19th-century Gothic architecture and is part of a group with Hunsdonbury to the south, of which it was formerly a part.
