Description
The Aisled Barn at Hadham Park, located 40 metres northeast of the house, dates from the late 16th century. This barn features eight bays and is oriented north-south, with double doors situated in the west side, specifically in the second and sixth bays from the south. It has a high red brick plinth, which includes spur plinths that extend across the aisles to support plates that carry the arcade posts. The barn is constructed with a timber frame and is weatherboarded. It has a very steep gabled roof that is currently covered in corrugated iron, with the roof raised at the eaves above the double doors. The structure includes heavy square arcade posts with swept jowls, which are supported by long slender curved braces connecting to the arcade plate and tie beam. There is an aisle tie beam that features a short brace from the jowled wall post. An unusual curved member rises from the aisle tie to the back of the arcade post, carrying the aisle purlin in a notch on its back. The arcade plate is jointed with face-halved and bladed scarf joints over each post. The roof has thin members in a steep clasped purlin design, with collar and angled queen struts. This barn is part of a courtyard group.
