Description
The Aisled Barn at Thorley Hall, located 60 metres north of the house, is a barn dating from the 16th century or possibly earlier. It features a long, 9-bay timber-framed structure that is weatherboarded and has a steeply pitched roof. The roof is half-hipped, with tiles that were replaced by dark metal sheeting around 1945. On the east side, there are projecting gabled porches in the third bay from each end. The barn has modern double doors at the north end and in the west wall of the aisle next to the southwest corner.
Inside, there are heavy square arcade posts set on raised brick bases. These posts are inclined inward and gradually thicken to a jowled head. Curved braces connect the tie beams to the arcade plate, and the aisle tie-beams are dovetail notched onto the arcade posts. The nave is supported by clasped purlin queen-post trusses, each with one purlin on each slope, along with curved wind braces and flat laid rafters. This late medieval barn is of significant interest due to its aisled construction and large size.
