Description
The barn at Downing Farm, dating from around 1600, features a raised roof over the aisle, possibly altered in the 19th century. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a roof that is hipped on the right side and has a gablet at the apex. Originally thatched, the roof was re-covered with buff pantiles around 1983. The north wall likely had two original cartway openings, though one is now blocked. The barn consists of seven bays and has a single aisle. Inside, the arcade posts have jowled heads, with cambered tie beams and cranked bracing connecting the posts to the tie beams. There is additional bracing from the aisle ties to the arcade posts. The roof structure is of Queen post design, featuring collars and clasped through purlins.
