Description

Bolebec Cottage is a house dated 1587, as indicated on the overmantel in the ground floor rear room. It is timber-framed, with the frame exposed in the gable end and rendered infill. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with plain tiles, featuring an original ridge stack made of gault brick with a recessed panel at the base. Originally, the structure included a three-bay parlour wing to a hall, which has since been demolished.

The cottage has two storeys and an attic, with the first floor jettied. The gable end features one 20th-century window on each floor, while the ground floor window is flanked by two three-light windows that have original ovolo mullions. The timber framing is of substantial scantling, and there are curved downward braces from the corner posts to the sill.

Inside, the ceilings of the front and rear rooms are supported by prick posts with moulded heads. The rear inglenook has an overmantel made of clunch, divided into three bays by short pilasters. The end bays display the initials W.C. and S.C., while the centre bay shows the date 1587. Some original panelling with a frieze can be found in the rear room. An upper room features a main beam with ovolo moulding and an original clunch fireplace, which is now badly worn. The roof is constructed with clasped, through purlins. Additionally, the middle rail in the north side wall contains mortices for the floor frame of the hall.
