Description

A house, likely originating in the 16th century, with timber framing and alterations dating to the later 17th century, and further substantial alterations in 1911 to imitate Tudor styles. It is arranged in an L-shaped layout, with the original section running north-south. The building is constructed with pargetting, painted brick and plaster, and an old tile roof. Half-timbering is present on the first floors of the west and east elevations. A corner stair turret with a pyramid roof and a top belfry features on the west side. Two half-timbered gables are visible on the west elevation, the southern one above the front door and dated 1911. A ground floor cloister with a pent roof, and a lean-to extension are on the north side. The windows are leaded casements. A tall, red brick chimney stack, dating to the later 17th century, with multiple diagonal shafts and moulded upper courses is located towards the south. A smaller, similar stack is present on the north. The east elevation has three projecting gable ends; the ends have jettied upper floors, and in the centre is a bracketed square casement oriel. The oriel windows are mullioned and transomed. A further wing, built in the early 20th century and pargetted, projects from the garden front and features a projecting gable end. It has imitation 17th-century chimney stacks. The interior of the original north-south block includes Elizabethan panelling taken from Patmore Hall in 1862, along with exposed 17th-century floor beams and joists. A ground floor room on the north side has a fireplace with a chamfered, four-centred arch surround of the later 17th century.
