Description
The Bull House, now a garden pavilion, is located at Stanstead Bury, 30 metres northwest of Bury. This building dates from the late 17th century, with some alterations made at the end of the 16th century. It was likely constructed around 1689 for Edmund Field. The structure is made of red brick in Flemish bond and is a square, single-storey building topped with a steep pyramidal red tile roof, featuring a lead acorn finial and a wooden eaves cornice. Each side has openings without arches: there are two small paned flush casements on the north and south sides, a boarded door on the east, and a modern stable door on the west. The walls are eighteen inches thick, and the roof has a butt-purlin design supported by corner principals, with angle-ties across the corners between the wall plates. A gabled dormer on the west side lights the upper part of the same space. The old wall connecting the Bull House to the main house stands about three metres high and features 19th-century square brick piers flanking a central gateway.
