Description

The gates and gatelodges to the North Lodge and South Lodge of Briggens House Hotel date from 1914 and are built of plum brick with red brick dressings. They feature steep Coniston slate roofs and carved limestone urns on the gatepiers, along with heavy wrought iron gates. The design is a formal classical symmetrical arrangement approached by a parapetted bridge from Essex over a stream.

The parapet wall has deep moulded brick capping and short square piers, leading into a small rectangular forecourt. The heavy wrought iron double gates, which have scrolled tops, are set between tall brick piers topped with urn finials. Each gatelodge is a tall single storey with attics, featuring steep hipped roofs, a square central chimney, and flat-topped dormers with moulded cornices.

Each lodge has two flush box sash windows with 6/6 panes, set in round arched panels with keystones, and a moulded wooden eaves cornice. An open porch with a parapeted flat roof connects each lodge to a gatepier, and each lodge has an ornamental wrought iron gate in a round arched opening with stone imposts and keystones. There is a circular opening with a scrolled grill on the canted face next to the gate. Matching brick extensions are located at the rear of each lodge. The entrance provides a view of Briggens House along the avenue.
