Description

The walls to the walled gardens located southeast of Balls Park Mansion are early 18th century structures, with alterations and repairs made in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of red brick laid in Flemish bond, topped with Portland stone copings and finials on the piers.

The site consists of two square enclosures. The piers feature moulded stone copings with ogee caps and ball finials. In the west wall of the south garden, there are wrought-iron gates with 19th-century scrollwork. The north garden has a section of lowered wall in the center of the north side, which includes ramped brick coping, brick piers with stone caps, and carved urns on pedestals, along with timber battened gates that have carved scroll tops. A gardener's cottage from the 18th century is situated along the northeast run of the east wall of the north garden.

The south garden features arched openings with stone impost blocks, double header red brick arches, and stone keyblocks inscribed with the words 'Nan's Garden'. It also has battened oak doors with wrought-iron strap hinges and timber pergolas supported on brick piers with stone caps inside each doorway.

Historically, the gardens at Balls Park were restored at the turn of the 20th century by Sir George Faudel-Phillips, who acquired the property in 1901 but had been leasing it since the 1880s.
