Description

The Pearson Memorial stands within All Saints Cemetery, dating to circa 1900. It is a raised memorial shaft with a sculpted, pinnacled head, set upon an octagonal plinth with three steps – one octagonal and two circular. The memorial is situated on a raised York stone paved area edged with granite curbs and a raised granite circular surround. The memorial’s column sits on a flat cyma recta moulded plinth base, with incised lettered panels on each major face. It features cavetto moulded re-entrant corners, a roll and carved capital with foliated corner volutes, and a supporting canopy with gables and a pinnacled head carved with poppyheads. Within the canopy are four trefoil headed niches containing sculpted figures of St John, St George, the Virgin and Child, and Sarah, mother of Abraham.

The memorial commemorates George Pearson JP of Brickendonbury, who died in 1899. The east window in the Church of All Saints and St John, Queen's Road, was installed in his memory. Additional family members, including his wife Sarah (died 1911), are also commemorated. The cemetery, located to the south of the churchyard, was laid out in the late 19th century and fronts Hagsdell Road as its southern boundary, with the Pearson Memorial serving as its principal axial feature.
