Description
This is a wrought-iron gate, part of a pair originally from Priory House, which was demolished in the mid-19th century. The gate dates back to the early 18th century and was re-erected in 1964. It features square uprights, a band of scrollwork, intermediate spears, and a semicircular arched head adorned with scrollwork and urn side panels. An arched overthrow displays additional scrollwork, spearheads, leaves, and a Greek Cross finial.
Historically, Hertford Priory was established by Ralph de Limesi, a knight of William I, on a site south of the River Lea. After the Dissolution, Priory House was built on the site in the 17th century, but it was taken down in the mid-19th century. The gates were then relocated near the Church of All Saints with St John on Queen's Road. In 1964, the construction of the Hertford Relief Road, Gascoyne Way, led to their removal and subsequent resetting between modern red brick piers, facing each other across the new dual carriageway.
