Description

This is a house, later used as a ground-floor shop with flats above to the rear, dating back to the 18th century and refaced in the early 19th century. It is timber-framed with a stuccoed front and plastered rear, and features long black-weatherboarded rear outshut. The roof is tiled, but concealed by a parapet at the front, with a square red brick chimneystack on the right (west) side and a plastered stack at the rear.

The front elevation is three storeys high with two bays. The first and second floors each have two slightly recessed 12-pane sash windows with architrave surrounds. Decorative details include flush panels bordered by incised channels with Greek key ornament above the first-floor windows, a plat band at second-floor level, recessed panels above the second-floor windows, and a band with a moulded cornice and blocking course/parapet above. The ground floor has an early 19th-century shopfront with a bow window (now plain glazed) above a later red granite stallriser, and a recessed, three-quarter margin glazed door on the left, set below a fanlight with painted ornamental glass. There is a panelled pilaster outer surround and fascia below the cornice, with a 20th-century fascia board above.

The rear of the building is plastered with a hipped roof and casement windows, above a long, black-weatherboarded rear outshut with casement windows on the first floor. This outshut was formerly used as stabling with a loft above and was accessed through a former carriageway (now blocked) between numbers 44 and 46 to the west. It contains parts of numbers 60 and 64, with the latter now including storage and garaging at ground-floor level, and two flats on each of the first and second floors of the front block.

The shop interior retains 19th-century fittings. The building has been used by Sheffield Chemists since 1804, though the shopfront and facade appear to date from approximately 1820-1830.
