Description
This is a wrought-iron gate, one of a pair, that was originally part of Priory House, which was demolished in the mid-19th century. The gate dates from the early 18th century and was re-erected in 1964. It features square uprights, a scrollwork band, intermediate spears, and a shouldered semicircular arched head adorned with scrollwork and urn fixed side panels. Additionally, there is an arched overthrow with scrollwork, spearheads, leaves, and a Greek Cross finial.
Historically, Hertford Priory was established by Ralph de Limesi, a knight of William I, on a site south of the River Lea. After the Dissolution, a house was built on the site in the 17th century, which was later demolished in the mid-19th century. The gates were then reset near the Church of All Saints with St John on Queen's Road. In 1964, the construction of the Hertford Relief Road, Gascoyne Way, led to their removal and subsequent resetting between modern red brick piers, facing each other across the new dual carriageway.
