Description
The gateway located to the west of Number 35 on Church Street in Hertford dates from the early 19th century. It consists of gatepiers, gates, and screens. The structure features cast-iron gates, two cast-iron gateposts, and three stuccoed gateposts. The central pair of carriage gates includes square balusters topped with cross finials, with more slender uprights alternating in the lower section. The gates have segmental arched bracing and a dipped segmental top. On either side of the gates are fixed screens without bracing, supported by stuccoed piers. To the left, there is a footgate, which is a narrower version of the main gates, fixed to a cast-iron box gatepost that has arched scroll tops with a Greek key band and diagonal crosses at the bottom. A similar post is located at the far right. Originally, this gateway served as an entrance to All Saints Churchyard, but since 1964, access has been blocked by Gascoyne Way.
