Description

Spring Cottage is a house that dates back to the late medieval period, with a 16th century lower northwest wing and a 17th century main range that replaced a medieval hall, although the eastern half was likely demolished after a fire in 1947. The building features a timber frame that is weatherboarded over a brick plinth, with stucco on the north and east side walls. It has steep old red tile roofs and is L-shaped, facing south. The main range has two storeys and attics, with a large central chimney and a lobby entry. The left part of the house, which survives, includes a two-storey wing that extends to the rear. There is a gabled porch leading to a new entrance into the southwest room. The front has two flush two-light casement windows on each floor and a four-panel door with a small hood. A very large red brick chimney features four diagonal shafts that are aligned over a moulded base. The southwest part includes a chamfered beam and large squared joists, while the northwest wing has an arch-braced roof that may have been open to the roof space. The main range is the left part of a symmetrical lobby entry plan house, containing four fireplaces in the central chimney, although the eastern side ones are now unused. There are four-centred brick arched fireplaces on the west side on both the ground and first floors, along with chamfered axial beams and exposed joists in the lower room.
