HUNSDON ACORN STREET (east side) Public Pump 12 metres N of Rosemary Cottage

Public pump. C19. Cast iron. A complex wayside public pump, marked 'CLIMAX' in 2 places and '235/15' on upturned pressure vessel over spout. The pump consists of a tapering vertical barrel with a horizontal flanged spout on one side with turncock and spurred spout end. The barrel is topped by a short vertical iron frame carrying a large fly-wheel, with 5 serpentine spokes, on the rear side and a large and small toothed gearwheel on the front. The larger gear has an eccentric connection rod to a stirrup fixed to a vertical pumprod below. An upper guide to the rod with a loop to allow the sideways play of the stirrup is fixed to the front of the barrel. Circular piston cap and bottom flange to the barrel are bolted to a round-ended iron plate flush with the paving. Part of a group with Rosemary Cottage and Rose Cottage.
