Description

The public pump located 12 metres north of Rosemary Cottage is a 19th-century cast iron structure. It is a complex wayside public pump, marked 'CLIMAX' in two places and '235/15' on the upturned pressure vessel above the spout. The pump features a tapering vertical barrel with a horizontal flanged spout on one side, which includes a turncock and a spurred spout end. At the top of the barrel, there is a short vertical iron frame that supports a large fly-wheel with five serpentine spokes on the rear side, along with a large and small toothed gearwheel on the front. The larger gear is connected to an eccentric connection rod that leads to a stirrup fixed to a vertical pumprod below. An upper guide for the rod, which includes a loop to allow sideways movement of the stirrup, is attached to the front of the barrel. The circular piston cap and bottom flange of the barrel are bolted to a round-ended iron plate that is flush with the paving. This pump is part of a group with Rosemary Cottage and Rose Cottage.
