Description

The United Reformed Church (Christchurch) with an attached hall is a chapel built in 1819, originally serving the Congregational community. It is constructed of white gault brick and features slate roofs. The large chapel has a gabled south front facing the road, while a lower hall is located at the north end, accessible from a lane on the west side. A single-storey vestry is set back at the northeast corner, accompanied by a burial ground in front of it. The front displays a triumphal arch design, with a double-width central arch that contains a round-headed window on the first floor above a recessed triple doorway. The side bays have square-headed windows with flat gauged arches, featuring recessed sashes with 8/8 panes. The entrance doors are six-panel, raised and fielded, with the bottom panels flush-headed, and are set in corresponding panelled reveals. These doors are flanked by pilasters that support a full entablature. There are blind side recesses with notice boards. The property is enhanced by cast iron decorations in lozenge and circle patterns on two pairs of gate standards, and spear-topped railings that lead up to a raised landing outside the south doors. Additionally, there is a triple-arched window above a canopied door leading to the hall.
