GV II

Barn, now a hall. Early to mid C16. Minet (1914) 78, suggests that this very large brick barn was built for William or Gyles Capell between 1505 and 1556, on a different orientation from the present house of c.1572. Roof replaced and buttresses added by Minet 1902. Adapted as school hall after 1949. Red brick in English bond. Steep red tiled gabled roof with bellcast eaves and bargeboards to ends. A lofty rectangular C16 brick barn, 101 feet 6 inches long, facing E and forming the W side of the entrance courtyard at Hadham Hall. Projecting plinths carried round chamfered corners at NE and SE which have moulded corbels where they become square higher up. Large central 4-centred arched entrance on E, with smaller similar arch to wicket on right, both now blocked. Triple ventilation slots in gable ends. Heavy buttresses with 2 offsets, 4 on each side and 2 on each end. Modern small stair addition at rear. Forms part of an important architectural group with the Gatehouse range, and Hadham Hall,
