Description
The Great Barn at Hadham Hall, located 120 metres west-northwest of the Hall, is a barn that has been converted into a hall. It dates from the early to mid 16th century. According to Minet in 1914, this large brick barn was likely built for William or Gyles Capell between 1505 and 1556, and it is oriented differently from the current house, which was constructed around 1572. The roof was replaced and buttresses were added by Minet in 1902. After 1949, the barn was adapted for use as a school hall.
The structure is made of red brick in English bond and features a steep red tiled gabled roof with bellcast eaves and bargeboards at the ends. It is a lofty rectangular barn, measuring 101 feet 6 inches long, and faces east, forming the western side of the entrance courtyard at Hadham Hall. The barn has projecting plinths that extend around chamfered corners at the northeast and southeast, with moulded corbels where they transition to square sections higher up. There is a large central four-centred arched entrance on the east side, along with a smaller similar arch for a wicket on the right, both of which are now blocked. The gable ends feature triple ventilation slots, and there are heavy buttresses with two offsets, four on each side and two on each end. A modern small stair addition has been added at the rear. The barn is part of an important architectural group that includes the Gatehouse range and Hadham Hall.
