Description

These are 17th-century boundary walls, incorporating a possible 16th-century wall and gateway on the north side, located at Hadham Hall on Stortford Road, Little Hadham. The walls are associated with a formal garden layout created by Arthur Capel, Lord Hadham, between 1634 and 1642.

The north boundary wall extends 180 metres eastwards from the Fish Pond. From the northeast corner, the east boundary wall runs 140 metres southwards, with a stepped section in the middle where the ruins of the northeast pavilion are located. The garden was depicted in a 1639 family portrait by Cornelius Johnson and in a 17th-century painting within Hadham Hall.

The walls are constructed of tall red brick in an irregular English bond pattern. In places on the north side, the wall was raised in the 19th century to accommodate greenhouses. Two buttressed piers are located at a blocked gateway, aligned with the east gable of the north wing of the Hall. The wall is taller where it runs down a slope to the east, enclosing an orchard. The east wall is generally lower and functions as a low retaining wall south of the ruined northeast pavilion.

Fine 17th-century red brickwork survives on the west side of the lower part of the pavilion, featuring raised rusticated brick quoins and a rusticated surround to the lower central window. The window has a rusticated, gauged brick, flat arch and a raised brick keystone. A portion of the cavetto-moulded rectangular oak window frame remains at the top of the brick blocking. The walls form part of the group of historic structures at Hadham Hall.
