Description
This is a 16th-century forecourt wall, with later repairs, located on the north side of Stortford Road in Little Hadham, to the south-east of the gatehouse at Hadham Hall. The low retaining wall, constructed of red brick, runs south and then east, separating the gatehouse range from the main hall. The lower side features an offset plinth, and the wall rises six courses to a brick-on-edge coping made of special, large double-ogee-headed moulded bricks. An 18th-century square brick pier, topped by a damaged Portland stone carved urn, marks a change in the wall's direction. The wall is interrupted by a modern driveway with low brick piers, and it ramps upwards to join the south range of the hall. The wall is of architectural interest and is an important linking element within the group of historic brick structures at Hadham Hall, completing the enclosure of the entrance court on the south-east side.
