Description
Stonehouse Farm House, located opposite Church Lane, is a late 17th-century house that stands two storeys high with three windows. It is timber-framed and plastered, facing west. The house features a steep old red tiled gabled roof that extends as a catslide over a contemporary rear outshot. On the south side, there is a large 18th-century hipped tiled dormer on the rear slope. The external red brick gable chimneys, which are larger on the south side, are built in English bond with a plinth offset.
This symmetrical double-fronted house has a central stair and passage, with a parlour located in the north room. The shallower rear part includes a dairy on the north and a kitchen on the south, which has a modern glazed extension. The upper floor has 3-light 19th-century wooden casements, while the ground floor features modern windows and a small gabled porch leading to a plank door. Notably, the dairy on the north wall retains an original 5-light unglazed mullioned wooden window, protected by metal gauze outside and a hinged shutter inside.
Inside, the ground floor boasts chamfered axial beams and a clasped purlin roof with high-set purlins. The parlour is adorned with a moulded and panelled dado rail and a fine late 17th-century corner cupboard, which has an ovolo-moulded two-panel door with H hinges and varied panels that create an eared or cross-shaped outline. Plank doors are also present throughout the house.
Historical records indicate that a house existed on this site as shown in Clinton's Estate map of 1588. The house is said to have been called 'Stane Farm' after Stane Street, which is located immediately to the north. Additionally, there is a well with a modern curb on the south side of the house.
