Description
Barnhurst is a barn that has been converted into a house, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is a tall single-storey structure with a timber frame and plastered exterior, facing west, and features a steeply pitched hipped thatched roof. The barn was converted from a weatherboarded structure around 1936. A large thatched porch projection remains on the east side. The west side has small-paned windows and a central entrance. The building originally had three bays, with close studding and long straight inclined braces visible in the walls above the inserted ceiling. The inner face of many of the studs has a shallow V-shaped depression. It has unjowled posts and a clasped purlin hipped roof supported by heavy flat laid rafters. Barnhurst was formerly part of Yewhurst Farm (Bridge End), which is reflected in its name, and it is part of a group of buildings at this crossroads hamlet.
