Description
These walls form a walled garden, likely dating to around 1668. They incorporate elements of a wall built in 1572, and the lower section of a wall from approximately 1440. Piers from the 16th century are also visible. The south gateway has a wrought iron gate, inscribed with the date 1903, and designed in an Arts and Crafts style. The enclosed area measures approximately 40 metres square and was created against the south range of Hadham Hall when the property became a tenant farm, after the Capel family moved to Cassiobury and parts of the Hall were demolished. A spur wall extends 15 metres to the south, originating near the east side of the south gate. The lower part of the south wall of the demolished eastern section of the south range remains, providing the enclosure wall with blocked openings. The walls are tall and constructed of red brick, with narrow bricks laid in an irregular bond and ogee moulded brick-on-edge coping. They are an important feature within the group of historic structures at Hadham Hall.
