Description

No. 3 Ashendene Road is a house that was originally a 16th or early 17th century structure, with a forge likely added in the 18th century. The building features timber frames on brick sills, with the house being roughcast and having a weatherboarded apron, along with steep old red tile roofs. The forge is dark weatherboarded with brown tiles. It has an irregular T-plan and is set back slightly from the road, facing west next to a road junction.

The house is two stories tall, with a south crosswing that only projects to the rear. The single-storey forge runs parallel to the road and is attached to the southwest corner of the wing, featuring a lean-to entrance porch at the angle. The west front includes double boarded doors leading to the forge, alongside a three-light casement window to the left. There is a similar window to the right of the entrance door in the porch, and a dormer window above the porch on the line of the hall range. This range has a large internal chimney with a triangular fillet at the rear and two windows on each floor, with three-light flush casement windows, although there is a single light on the ground floor to the left. The crosswing is lit from the rear gable, and the south side has been largely rebuilt, with a chimney at the southwest corner.

Inside, the house features exposed timbers in the walls and floors, and an old plank door with ironwork leading to a smaller room that has a wide open fireplace. The buildings were recently used as a shop and post office.
