Description

Bayford Grange is a house built in the mid-18th century, noted on a 1758 estate map as Mr. Mayberry's house. It features a parallel rear range from the late 18th century, which was heightened in the early 19th century, along with an early Victorian kitchen wing. The house was refurbished in the mid to late 20th century. The front range is made of red brick, while the parallel rear range is red with blue brick and heightened in grey brick. It has hipped, steep old red tile roofs and is a tall two-storey building with attics, measuring five windows wide and set back slightly, facing east.

The symmetrical east front has a high stucco plinth, a plat-band, and a wood bedmould beneath the shaped ends of the rafters that extend at the eaves. There are two hipped dormers on the roof slope, each with a moulded cornice and window surround for two-light casements. The recessed sash windows have segmental arches and segmental-topped upper sashes on each floor. A charming hipped trellis porch leads to a six-panel moulded door, with the top two panels glazed. The house has two stacks with groups of four 19th-century octagonal shafts and a low red brick forecourt wall with piers and rendered coping.

Inside, the ground floor of the front range features a mid-18th century moulded cornice, doorcase, and fireplace, along with a cut string stair that has turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and column newels. The first floor has a panelled dado with ovolo moulding and original cupboards. The kitchen wing and large bay window were added in one phase of work, featuring a modillioned cornice at the eaves with brick headers.
