Description

Hertford Lodge is a lodge for Bedwell Park, built between 1860 and 1861 by W.G. Habershon for Sir C.E. Eardley, Bart. It features red brick with black brick diapering and decorative timber framing, along with stone dressings and a tiled roof, showcasing a polychrome Gothic Revival style. The building has a T-shape plan and stands two storeys tall with a two-bay front.

On the ground floor, there is a plinth and brick diapering, with bay window projections that contain four-light chamfered mullion and transom casements, most of which have leaded panes. A small vertical light is positioned at the centre. The first floor projects in line with the ground floor bay windows, supported by shaped timber brackets, and features cross-braced sham timber framing with quatrefoils below. There are two-light casements in gabled semi-dormers adorned with cusped and wavy bargeboards.

On the right side, the ground floor has a six-light mullion and transom window, with the first floor projecting similarly to the front, topped with a finial on the bargeboarded gable. Towards the rear, there is an entrance bay beneath a smaller gable, featuring half-glazed doors with timber panels above and a cusped bargeboard over two lights in a small gable. A lower wing extends to the rear, which includes a projecting rectangular bay on the right side with a six-light stone mullion and transom window. The rear gable end has a four-light window, with the first floor projecting on brackets and bargeboards leading to a half-hipped roof. The left gable end mirrors the front with a projecting first floor and a bargeboarded gable with a finial. There is also a one-storey 20th-century flat-roofed addition that is not of special interest. The interior has not been inspected.
