Description
The Old Barn at Cottered Warren Farm is a 16th-century barn located 15 meters southeast of the house. It features a timber frame set on a red brick sill, with dark weatherboarding and a steep tiled roof. The barn has a tall seven-bay structure facing north, with a two-bay gabled porch at the third bay from the east. There are double doors to the porch and blocked rear doors in the same bay. The porch has a jettied gable triangle supported by brackets, which includes dovecote openings. Inside, the barn has jowled posts with long curved braces supporting cambered tie-beams of collar-beam trusses, with later queen-struts added. The roof is a clasped-purlin design with curved windbraces. The walls feature a mid-height rail that is tennoned in-line, along with curved tension braces. The wallplate has an edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts. This barn is a fine example of 16th-century construction, with little alteration over the years.
