Description
The barn at Shire Lane Farm is a 16th-century structure featuring a timber frame built on a brick sill, with dark weatherboarding and a steep old red tile roof. This tall barn has three bays and faces west, with double doors located in the middle bay. To the left of the doors is a lean-to stable, constructed with similar materials and featuring a stable door on the west side.
Architectural details include jowled posts, a mid-height rail that is tenoned in-line, and straight tension braces at the corners. Each bay has long curved braces connecting the posts to the wallplate, and there is an unjowled post at the center of each gable. The roof is a clasped purlin design, with one purlin on each slope, collar and queen-strut trusses, and straight wind-braces. The north gable features double curved braces, while the south gable has long curved braces. The wallplate includes squint-butted scarf joints with one edge peg.
