Description
Mermaid Cottage is a small house that was formerly an inn. It dates back to the 17th century but was refronted, raised, and extended in the 18th century. The building is constructed of rubble flint with brick bands forming panels and has an old tile roof with a central chimney and dentil brick eaves. It stands two storeys high and features three bays, with a fourth bay added recently on the right using matching materials and windows. The original doorway, located opposite the stack, has been replaced with a 2-light casement window. The current entrance is to the left and includes a modern lean-to tiled canopy. On the ground floor, there are three casement windows, all with segmental brick arches, while the first floor has three Yorkshire sashes. At the rear, there is a late 18th-century extension made of flint and brick, with an old tile roof parallel to the main roof. Inside, there is a large stack with an inglenook in the central room, stop-chamfered spine beams, and a timber frame in the rear wall with curved braces. There is also evidence that the eaves were raised in the 18th century.
