Description
Meeting House Cottage is a house that dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It was adapted into two houses during the late 18th century and has a small east extension added in the 20th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, with the lower floor covered in 18th-century red brick, all beneath a steep thatched roof. The east extension is made of brick and tile.
The building is long and has two storeys with a central chimney. It faces south and features a large room on each side of the chimney, with a narrow service room and stair at each end. The front has four windows and a door situated between each pair of lower windows. The east door now has a gabled porch, while the west door has been altered to a window. The windows are two-light flush casements with segmental arches on the lower floor. Inside, there are chamfered axial floor beams with notched stops and square-section joists.
The cottage is an isolated building, located not far from the Quaker burial ground that was given by John Exton of Ardeley in 1710.
