Description

The gates and gate piers at Briggens House Hotel, located 300 metres north of the house, date from the early 19th century and feature a Neo-classical design. The entrance to North Drive is marked by a pair of cast iron gates adorned with simple upright spears that have heavy flanged heads, along with crossed bars in the lower part of each gate leaf. The tall openwork cast iron piers are designed as tapered square pylons resting on ball feet, featuring a saltire with superimposed ovals at both the top and bottom, and stylized anthemion ornamentation along each face, bordered by a margin of rosettes. These piers are capped with deep flat square tops. The side railings extend down to lower terminal piers made of cast iron, which mirror the design of the taller piers. These gates are an important part of the setting for the mansion and the surrounding historic buildings.
