Description
The Walker Monument is located in the churchyard of Hunsdon, next to the stables northeast of the chancel. This monument, dating from 1881, is made of white limestone and features hard plaster mouldings on the surrounding wall. It consists of a rectangular Gothic tomb chest that is currently obscured by vegetation, enclosed by stone walls made of random squared rubble, with freestone quoins. The base is battered and topped with a heavy ogee base moulding. On the long side, there is a row of five trefoil pierced stones, along with a substantial series of plaster capping mouldings. The original sinkings for railings have been removed.
The upper part of the monument features a series of diminishing weathered courses that support a foliate recumbent cross, which is intricately carved in high relief and adorned with crockets along the top as a cornice. The inscription, in Lombardic lettering, commemorates the Walter family. This splendid 19th-century Gothic monument is of special architectural interest, although it is now sadly overgrown. It is part of a group of memorials within the churchyard.
