Description

The Old House is a Grade II* listed house located on the east side of High Street in Much Hadham village. It dates back to the earlier 16th century and features a timber frame that was altered in 1826. The exterior is a combination of painted brick, weatherboarding, and plaster, topped with a steep old tile roof that has a half-gabled southern end. The building is structured as a hall and cross wing, all part of one two-storey construction.

The upper storey is closely studded and jetties out at the northern end, supported by a richly moulded bressummer. The parapet includes a moulded cornice and a recessed, chamfered plaque on the southern side. The alterations made in 1826, which are dated on the parapet, include a Gothic door and a shop window on the ground floor. The door features two cinquefoil panels and quatrefoil bands both above and below, extending over a slightly bowed window with 27 panes. The moulded cornice continues over the bricked forward southern ground floor, which contains a 5/10 sash window, while the first floor has three small sash windows. Inside, there is scratch-moulded panelling in the front room behind the bowed window, and a 19th-century wrought iron foot scraper is present. The house is noted for its picturesque appearance in the street.
