Description

The farmhouse at Knoll Farm is a mid-17th century timber-frame building, enlarged at the east end in the early 19th century. The original timber frame is plastered and decorated with pargeting, with smooth margins around the windows. The ground floor has been rebuilt in plastered brick, featuring dripboards over the windows. The roof is steeply pitched, covered with old red tiles, and continues as a catslide to the rear.

It is a two-storey, three-unit lobby-entry plan house, facing south, with a gabled rear stair turret and an external 19th-century gable parlour chimney at the west end. The front facade has three windows: three-light flush casements on the upper floor, and flush box sash windows with 10/12 panes on the ground floor. A half-glazed boarded door provides access. A lean-to extension runs along the east side, rising to eaves level.

Inside, the parlour features an ogee stop to the chamfered axial beam. Other notable features include a face halved bladed scarf in the rear wallplate, straight braces in the walls, and curved braces to the tie-beams.
