Description

61 and 62 High Street is a house that was formerly a public house known as the John Barleycorn in the 19th century and is now used as offices. The building has an 18th-century front that covers a 17th-century structure, with 19th-century alterations and extensive renovations carried out in the 1970s. It is timber-framed and encased in red brick laid in Flemish bond, topped with an old tiled roof behind a parapet. The building stands three storeys high and features a dentil and moulded brick cornice. There are four sash windows with glazing bars, set in reveals beneath rubbed flat arches on the first and second floors. The 19th-century shopfront is framed by pilasters that have elaborate carved foliated console brackets. Timber pilasters also frame the door entrance and display windows across the facade. The early 20th-century glazing bars have been inserted, and there is a fascia with a moulded surround and a moulded wood cornice above, which may have been a former blind box. Internally, the timber framing is exposed.
