Description
Bridge Number 6 on the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal, located near Wilstone, was built between 1811 and 1814 by engineer Henry Provis for the Grand Junction Canal Company. This accommodation bridge is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring granite capping on the piers that support the parapet. It has large red coping bricks and is designed as a narrow hump-backed bridge over a narrowed section of the waterway, with earth ramps leading up to it at both ends. The bridge features a horseshoe arch with a 9-inch arch ring, and its battered side walls are topped by a raised band at the roadway level, with parapet walls that follow the curve of the hump. The square projecting end piers are stepped back at each level and define the outswept ends of the parapets. This bridge remains largely unaltered.
